Until both eyes learn to work together we humans lack a keen sense of depth perception, which plays a big role in catching a flying baseball. Scientific research has determined that the human brain, on average, does not develop the capability to coordinate both eyes in what is called ‘binocular vision’ until around age 7 or 8. However, given the information in this section, over time, we can be help our kids begin to learn the basics of baseball and develop some baseball skills. We want to see the activity from a kid’s perspective and teach and manage them within their perspective and recognize that the activities at the park are not always going to look like baseball. If we approach the season for what it is, spending time with our child and their friends, watching them run around, laugh while they work to develop skills to catch, throw and hit that little ball, then we can have a great time as coaches.Īs adults we are going to the park thinking ‘baseball’, while the kids are going to the park thinking ‘I get to see my friends and run around a lot’. If, as a Tee-Ball coach, we go into the season thinking we are going to experience baseball we are setting ourselves up for a lot of frustration and disappointment. Accepting these points as the realities that they are, and being prepared to deal with them, will enable us to better enjoy the time we spend on the field with our kids. Please do not view these statements as negatives. Kids will find interests other than baseball during practice (and games) Then, to make matters worse, we add the concept of tagging a base as an option for getting a runner out.Īnd we are trying to teach these concepts in an environment where simply being the one who comes up from the bottom of the pile with the ball is plenty to call it a successful day. For our kids this game of tag is a little more complicated because throwing and catching that darn ball doesn't always work out real well. The defensive side of the ball is where the majority of our teaching challenges lie. Some kids, because of the fact that when they are running between bases they are not 'safe', will be reluctant to leave a base even when play forces them to the next base, especially when it is clear they are vulnerable to being tagged out (or put out at the next base). They are not particularly conscious of the times when they are going to get to the next base without a play being made on them. On offense, when the ball is in play, the kids' experience is a mad dash of anxiety in hopes of getting to the next base safely. (see the Coaches page – ‘Aren’t We Playing Tag?’) As we get into teaching skills and the basics to our kids, we must keep in mind that elements of 'tag' and being 'safe' will drive much of how the kids respond to activities on the field. Throwing skills, fielding skills, catching a throw at a base for a force out and even batting skills are secondary to the concept of 'safe' versus 'tagged out'. The central thought for these kids is the runner being safe at a base or being tagged out. Playing tag is almost a daily rite at recess for kids ages 5-7. Running the bases and while on defense, Tee-Ball is just another version of tag. We face the challenge of helping them understand that their legs do most of the work when swinging the bat. Before we start working with Tee-Ballers we need to understand their perspective of the game.īatting, as far as their logic goes, is done with the arms. Here’s what BetterTouchTool looks like (these are the settings that I use). And, in case you’re hungry for more, get a load of the things that BetterTouchTool can do: I also added a three-finger-tap-in-the-middle-of-the-trackpad gesture to automatically center the frontmost window. The keyboard requires a firmer touch, and when you’re switching between apps all day it’s nice to do it without having to press very hard. Sure, you can do some or all of this from the keyboard, but for me the trackpad is handier. I also have buttons to toggle Mission Control and to show the Desktop. At the bottom, I have a button to toggle the effects of Desktop Curtain* (it hides all other apps, and also hides desktop icons, making it easier to focus). That is, if I tap in the top left corner of my Magic Trackpad, the Contacts app comes to the front. Here’s how I’ve used it to configure my Magic Trackpad: With BetterTouchTool your Magic Trackpad will be ultra-configurable, super-programmable, and highly-personalizable. Now let’s talk about turning something on: namely, the “pay what you want” BetterTouchTool (donations accepted). You might, for example, want to turn off the “two-finger double-tap smart zoom.” That one drives unsuspecting users absolutely bonkers. If you have a Magic Trackpad (or, come to think of it, if you have ANY kind of trackpad, including the built-in ones on the MacBooks and MacBook Pros), a careful review of the options available in the Trackpad Preference Pane is well worth the time. It defaults to having everything turned on, but you’ll probably want to turn a few things off, at least at first, lest you inadvertently trigger some action by making an accidental gesture you didn’t know existed. You get to customize the Magic Trackpad’s settings to a certain degree using Apple’s Trackpad Preference Pane in the System Preferences. The Magic Trackpad is wireless, comes with batteries, and is $69 (list price). Also, you can program the Magic Trackpad to click with just a tap instead of a full-on “click,” reducing effort. This reduces repetitive motion, which is what tires out your clicking fingers. That’s a big target, which means you don’t have to put your clicking finger into any particular position in order to click. Second, the entire surface of the Magic Trackpad is clickable. Just place it on top of the giant pile of stuff where your desk used to be and the Magic Trackpad is ready to go. In fact, you don’t need any room on your desk to use the Magic Trackpad. First, you don’t need a lot of room on your desk to use the Magic Trackpad. The Magic Trackpad has a couple of big advantages compared to the mouse. I’m using one with my iMac and after a couple of days getting used to it, I’m hooked. It’s like a MacBook Pro’s trackpad, only bigger, and designed for use with a desktop Mac. This means that from the app-server, we can hardcode the DB server host to be ‘DB-01’, and it will work fine in both local dev and live servers. We want to use nice short hostnames for addressing the servers instead of IP-addresses, and these happen to be the same in production. Stock footage websites do not edit them in such a way to make this possible (I’ll show you how I do this later in the post.) Stock footage is not edited to loop - I want footage that can loop seamlessly in the background in ProPresenter. Most of the clips have too much movement and people in them that can be distracting in worship. The style of shooting is not right - Most stock footage sites do not shoot for the purpose of using their footage for backgrounds. I like using clips in worship that are over 30 seconds. The clips are too short for use in a worship environment - Most footage on stock footage sites are not long enough to use in a worship environment, meaning the clips would loop every 10-20 seconds. comes closest to being the most affordable at $200/mo but that’s still a little steep for non-commercial work. While I could purchase and download a bunch of stock footage from places like, ,, , or, there are two issues with buying stock footage online. Now that high-quality video production has become affordable and accessible, I think we have an opportunity to use footage in worship rather than motion graphics. Because of this, they can also be great to use during preaching. In this article, I’ll share my complete process for creating motion backgrounds for worship. A still background can provide a great look without drawing too much attention. If your congregation isn’t used to having video on their screens, it might be best to keep your worship slides simple for a season. You can use them as you first get used to creating your slides and work your congregation up to using motions. If you’re just jumping into using visuals at your church, still backgrounds are a great place to start. If you’re not ready to spend, stills are the go-to option because they are almost always available for free. While you can find free motions here and there around the web, for the most part, motion backgrounds cost money. However, there are a few reasons that you may choose to use still backgrounds instead. These days, it’s most common for churches to use motion backgrounds, which are looping videos made specifically for displaying text, in their worship services.
